Sam Groth has survived a five-set slog on the opening day of the Australian Open playoff but Marinko Matosevic wasnt as lucky, falling to talented teenager Omar Jasika.Groth struggled to find rhythm but finally cracked spirited opponent Dayne Kelly 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 10-8 in a match that went into a fourth hour at Melbourne Park on Monday. The 2015 Newcombe Medallist saved a match point before finally finding a fifth-set break in the 17th game, ripping a stunning cross-court backhand to break Kelly to love.He gave away break points in the following game before closing out the match against the unheralded world No.311.That was a bit tougher than I wanted but I didnt get broken all match, which is a pretty good effort, he said.Groth joined other first-day winners John-Patrick Smith, Marc Polmans and top-seeded Andrew Whittington in the last eight. The 16-man field is competing for a sole wildcard into Januarys Australian Open.Jasika caused the upset of the day with a stunning turnaround against Matosevic, ranked 12 years and 147 places his senior. The 31-year-old faces a stay in the tennis wilderness after blowing a two-set lead and a break in the third set, losing 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.Matosevic, 31, will now have to struggle through Januarys qualifying tournament to gain entry into the first grand slam of 2017, which would be his first major since Wimbledon 2015.The combustible former top-40 talent didnt shake hands with the chair umpire after his loss, reacting angrily to a series of line calls as the match fell from his grasp.Buoyed on by Omars Army in the crowd, Jasika drew error after error out of his opponent in the third and fourth sets before triumphing in the decider.I think they got into his head, Jasika said of his boisterous cheer squad.I think he was trying to get them out of his head but he couldnt. They were just chirping away ... and then he started to get tired and fatigued because I kept him out there in the sun.Whittington survived a major scare and a breathing problem to win his first-round match, outlasting teenage talent Max Purcell 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-2.The Melburnian coughed between points and sought medical assistance through the three-hour match in hot conditions. The womens tournament gets under way on Tuesday.AUSTRALIAN OPEN WILDCARD PLAYOFF RESULTS - DAY ONE1-Andrew Whittington def Max Purcell 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-22-Sam Groth def Dayne Kelly 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 10-8Omar Jasika def 3-Marinko Matosevic 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-44-Marc Polmans def Scott Jones 6-2 6-4 6-05-John-Patrick Smith def Maverick Banes 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-16-Chris OConnell def Alex De Minaur 6-2 7-6 (7-3) 6-2Gavin van Peperzeel def 7-Luke Saville 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-1 2-1 (ret)8-Blake Mott def Harry Bourchier 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 6-1 Devontae Booker Jersey . -- Matt Ryan needed one of the best games of his career to lead the Falcons and their depleted offence out of their three-game losing streak last week. Gary Zimmerman Jersey . Siddikur, whose previous win on the circuit came in Brunei three years ago, finished his bogey-free round with a birdie on the 18th for a total of 17-under 199. The Australian is competing in his final season in Formula One and still looking for his first win this year. He will look to end Vettels run of six straight race wins on Sunday. Webber, who is fifth in the championship, earned his second pole from the past three races and 13th of his career. Virgil Green Jersey .Y. -- Jayna Hefford scored the winning goal Friday as Canada survived a scare with a 4-3 win over Sweden at the Four Nations womens hockey tournament. Karl Mecklenburg Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. Each week of the NFL campaign, we sift through the deeper options at each position with an eye toward identifying streaming fantasy commodities with valuable matchups to consider.Do you need replacement options for this heavy bye week? We have some choice names to consider for those seeking widely available options at each position.QuarterbackRyan Fitzpatrick, New York JetsAs bad as he played in the first half against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8, Fitzpatrick is the best option among quarterbacks who are owned in 20 percent or less of ESPN.com leagues. He draws a matchup against the Miami Dolphins, a team Fitzpatrick has excelled against recently. Last season, Fitzpatrick averaged 247.5 passing yards and 2.5 touchdowns per game against the Dolphins. Expecting Fitzpatrick to hit that mark again this week is completely reasonable, as the Dolphins have allowed 232 passing yards per game, despite playing two of their games against backup quarterbacks. -- K.D. Josh McCown, Cleveland BrownsIn his two starts this season, McCown has averaged 41 attempts for 300.5 yards per game with two touchdowns in each outing. The Cowboys, meanwhile, rate last in the NFL at pressuring opposing passers, as they are creating a hit, hurry or sack on just 20.3 percent of dropbacks. The Cowboys also dont blitz very often, with the fifth-lowest rate (18.2 percent of opposing dropbacks) in the league. As home underdogs against a Dallas offense that ranks second in the league in points per drive, we could again see McCown prove pass-happy with some potential for soft fantasy points into the second half. -- J.M.Running backTim Hightower, New Orleans SaintsAfter Mark Ingram was benched Sunday for a continued fumbling problem, recommending Hightower becomes a no-brainer. In relief of Ingram, Hightower ran for 102 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. On Sunday, Hightowers Saints face the San Francisco 49ers,?the only team in the NFL that permits more than 5 yards per carry. Its safe to project 10 or more carries for Hightower this week, and another fumble by Ingram could lead to a significantly expanded role. Remember that Hightower was a savior last season, when Ingram went down with an injury during the fantasy playoffs, so it should be obvious why you should grab him immediately. -- K.D.C.J. Prosise, Seattle SeahawksHyped throughout the summer as a potential fantasy sleeper, Prosise might just be waking up after missing much of the season with a broken hand suffered in Week 1. The Notre Dame product led Seattle with 80 yards receiving and 103 yards from scrimmage in Week 8. A gifted receiving talent, Prosise ranked third among draft-eligible tailbacks in yards per route run in college last season, per College Football Focus. While Christine Michael is expected to dominate early downs, we could see Prosise, who has significantly increased his snap rate in each of the past two games, play a sizable role in the short passing game, as Russell Wilson looks to evade a Buffalo front that ranks second in the league in pressuring opposing passers. Best served for streaming usage in PPR formats, Prosise is a widely available asset to consider during a challenging week at the position. -- J.M.Wide receiverBrian Quick, Los Angeles RamsA.J. Green, Mike Evans, Cole Beasley and Quick are the only players in the NFL with at least 50 receiving yards in every game their teams have played since Week 3. The first three are owned in almost every league. Quicks ownership is less than 6 percent. Coming off their bye, Quicks Rams will host the Carolina Panthers, who, despite their reputation, rank dead last in receiving yardage permitted per game this season. Quick is a gift off the waiver wire; take advantage of it. -- K.D.Kendall Wright, Tennessee TitansI dont love the fact that Wright has played on just 38.1 percent of the teams offensive snaps in the five games hes played this season. However, I admire that Wright has led the team in target share over the past three weeks, with 22.2 percent of Marcus Mariotas attempts the past three games. In two of the past three, Wright has delivered at least 15 fantasy points in standard leagues and enjoyed a healthy rate of 13.dddddddddddd1 air yards per target. With a budding rapport developing with Mariota and the San Diego secondary depleted by injury, Wright is a fine streaming candidate to consider in a game that has a healthy implied point total, per the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. -- J.M.Tight endVirgil Green, Denver BroncosAfter touting Houstons C.J. Fiedorowicz in Week 8, my recommendation pivots to the Broncos tight end. Green finally performed at a suitable level to be considered for fantasy purposes when he gained 55 yards on four catches against the San Diego Chargers. Because the Broncos draw the Raiders this week, its safe to expect plenty of receiving yards for all Broncos receivers -- including Green -- as Oakland has allowed the sixth-most receiving yards in the league. -- K.D.Austin Hooper, Atlanta FalconsJacob Tamme has been ruled out for Thursdays tilt with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that just ceded more than 500 passing yards to the Raiders in Week 8. Hooper is set to start for the leagues top offense; Atlanta leads the league in points per drive. Tamme has consumed 11.4 percent of Ryans attempts this season, while Hooper has accounted for 4 percent. With a real shot at consolidating this share and with the Bucs yielding 55.8 yards per game to tight ends, Hooper is an under-the-radar asset during a heavy bye at the position. -- J.M.D/STDallas CowboysDefensive teams facing the Browns have scored six or more points in seven of the nine games the Browns have played. The Cowboys defense has scored six or more points in three of the past four games. Together, those two facts make the Cowboys a suitable streaming option from the deepest part of the waiver wire. Dont overthink things -- play the best matchup available, and this is it. -- K.D.New York GiantsThe Eagles offense is proving particularly conservative of late; Carson Wentz is 33rd out of 34 qualifying passers, with just 4.65 yards per dropback since the start of Week 6. Meanwhile, the rookie has been sacked on 7.8 percent of his dropbacks with Lane Johnson over the past three games, sixth-highest in the league.
