LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Real Madrids transfer ban was cut on Tuesday, allowing the club to sign new players sooner than expected.The Court of Arbitration for Sport partially upheld Madrids appeal against FIFA, keeping the team barred from registering new players only in the January trading period. But Madrid can now sign new players in the offseason transfer period starting in June.FIFA had imposed a one-year transfer ban in January. Its appeal panel confirmed the sanction to take effect for 2017.Madrid must also pay FIFA a fine of 240,000 Swiss francs ($233,000), reduced from 360,000 Swiss francs ($350,000) by the single judge who heard the case.Considering that the infractions committed by Real Madrid were less serious and less numerous than argued by the FIFA judiciary bodies, the (judge) ruled that the sanctions imposed on Real Madrid had to be reduced, the court said in a statement.Still, the club -- which on Sunday added the Club World Cup trophy to its Champions League title -- complained about the verdict.The decision highlights the injustice of the original ban imposed by FIFA, although the club regrets that the CAS lacked the courage to revoke the ruling entirely, Madrid said in a statement.The court gave an urgent ruling Tuesday and is expected to publish its full reasons in several weeks.Madrid denied wrongdoing in signing young players from outside Spain who played in games since 2005.The case involved the sons of current coach Zinedine Zidane.Madrids signings were registered by the Spanish soccer federation, which has repeatedly allowed clubs to break FIFA rules designed to prevent trafficking of minors. Grimm wasnt at his best early in the game as Seattle battered him for eight hits in the first 2 2-3 innings with relievers warming in the Rangers bullpen. But Grimm managed to limit any major damage — helped by a blown call by first base umpire Jeff Nelson in the second — before settling down and retiring seven straight batters at one point. Seattles chance at a big second inning took a hit with a botched call by Nelson. Jesus Sucre hit a grounder to Mitch Moreland at first, who threw down to second to get the lead runner. The relay from Elvis Andrus back to first was in time to get Sucre but the throw was caught by Grimm running over to cover and not Moreland, whose foot was on the bag. He didnt realize until watching the replay later that it was Grimm who caught the throw and it never reached Morelands glove. "It would have been a much bigger argument if I had known that at the time," Wedge said. Some of the furor stopped when Brendan Ryan followed with a two-out RBI double to tie the game at 2 and was further muted by what the Rangers did against Saunders and Seattles bullpen. Still, the Rangers realized they got lucky. "I didnt have to see the replay," Washington said. "I knew we caught a break there." Saunders (3-5) entered the night 9-0 at Safeco Field, including a 3-0 mark with a 0.94 ERA this season. But Saunders gave up six earned runs and eight hits in just five innings and the Mariners lost their seventh straight.
