The Manchester derby enters a new era Saturday, when Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are set to oppose each other for the first time as Premier League foes.Manchester City and Manchester United, the two biggest spenders during the summer 2016 transfer window, each enter Saturdays showdown having won their first three matches of the season. The managers have built up plenty of friction over the course of 16 head-to-head meetings since 2009, most notably in the El Clasico rivalry with Barcelona and Real Madrid, adding another layer of intrigue to the matchup. So as Guardiola and City prepare to take the pitch against Mourinho and United in a clash between unbeaten sides, we revisit some of the fiercest pro and college coach/manager rivalries in sports history.Pep Guardiola vs. Jose MourinhoAs two of the top coaches in the sport, Guardiola and Mourinho have been chasing the same trophies for the better part of a decade. Mourinho, the animated Portuguese manager of United, and Guardiola, the stoic Spanish manager at City, now find themselves separated by a mere 7 kilometers after leading several of the most powerful clubs in Europe. They matched wits for the first time in the 2009-10 Champions League, with Guardiola at the helm of Barcelona and Mourinho managing Inter Milan. Mourinho got the better end of things, with Inter earning two victories and a draw in four matches. A loss to Barca in the second leg of the semifinals was irrelevant, as Inter won on aggregate. When Mourinho took charge at Real Madrid in 2010, it placed him squarely in the path of Guardiola. Barcelona won the first La Liga matchup with a 5-0 rout. Barca and Real then squared off four times over the course of 18 days in April and May 2011. They began with a 1-1 draw in a La Liga match. Real and Mourinho followed with a 1-0 victory in the Copa del Rey final. Barca and Guardiola bounced back with a 2-0 victory and 1-1 draw to advance in the Champions League semifinals, later defeating Manchester United in the final. In six subsequent Barca-Real matchups, Guardiola won three times, earned two draws and lost once. (ESPN FC revisited the El Clasico animosity between Mourinho and Guardiola in this article.)Most recently, Guardiola and Bayern Munich won the final of the 2013 UEFA Super Cup on penalty kicks over Mourinhos Chelsea side. In total, Guardiola has defeated Mourinho seven times, Mourinho has won three matches, and there have been six draws.Sir Alex Ferguson vs. Arsene WengerMany managers challenged Ferguson during his 27-year reign at Manchester United, but Wenger clearly stands as his chief nemesis.Fergusons accomplishments are the stuff of legend: 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, two Champions League trophies and the magical 1999 treble season. After arriving with Arsenal in 1996, Wenger quickly established his Gunners as the primary challengers to Fergusons side. Wenger has won three Premier League titles and six FA Cups -- although two of them have come since Fergusons retirement in 2013.To say Ferguson and Wenger didnt care for each other would be putting it mildly, although the relationship began to thaw in later years. In total, these adversaries collided 49 times in 17 seasons. Ferguson won 22 times, Wenger won 15 times, and there were 12 draws. Ferguson praised Wenger earlier this year -- something once unimaginable -- for his consistency and refusal to yield to critics.Highlights of the rivalry include Arsenals 1-0 win in March 1998 that essentially won the Premier League title in Wengers first full season and Uniteds 2-0 win in October 2004 that ended Arsenals 49-match league unbeaten streak. The series was rudely punctuated by Uniteds 8-2 win in August 2011, arguably Wengers lowest moment at the Gunners helm.Incidentally, Ferguson matched up 16 times against Mourinhos challengers from Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Porto and wound up on the wrong side of the results. Ferguson won just four of those matches and earned five draws, with Mourinho winning seven times.Brian Clough vs. Don RevieThese two English football coaching titans shared a number of similarities in their backgrounds. Both grew up in Middlesbrough, though only Clough is memorialized there. Both managed Leeds United -- Revie memorably, Clough forgettably. Both badly wanted to manage the English national team; Revie got the job in 1974, but Clough never did despite being a candidate several times. Both won multiple league championships. They also shared a healthy contempt for each other, which boiled over in a cantankerous 1974 television appearance. After leading Leeds to the first division crown for a second time in 1973-74, Revie took over the English national team. Despite having criticized Revie and his players as cheaters, Clough got the job to replace him at Leeds. Clough was unable to replicate the success he had in leading Derby County to the first division title in 1971-72, and he was sacked just 44 days after arriving at Leeds -- an episode that later inspired a book and movie, The Damned United.Revie went on to coach the United Arab Emirates national team, while Clough landed at Nottingham Forest and went on to win the 1977-78 first division title and back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.Bill Belichick vs. Rex RyanA case can be made here for Belichick vs. Tom Coughlin. The two served as assistants together under Bill Parcells, and Coughlins New York Giants went 3-2 against Belichicks New England Patriots, including victories in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.But Belichick and Ryan have jousted more frequently and more colorfully, and they maintain an active rivalry in the AFC East Division. While Belichick has been impassive in New England, Ryan has been just as entertaining with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. Belichick runs his program in secretive fashion and offers as little information as possible to the media. Ryan embraces the spotlight in a whirlwind of braggadocio, having introduced fans to a carnival of Super Bowl guarantees, Rexican food, the Sanchize, foot fetishes and one unforgettable Butt Fumble.Belichick holds an 11-4 advantage over Ryan but has been challenged over the years by Ryans defensive schemes. Belichick won both meetings last year in Ryans first season with Buffalo.Ryan won the only playoff matchup between the two: a 28-21 victory at New England in January 2011 that avenged a 45-3 loss during the regular season. Round 16 is scheduled for Oct. 2 in New England, and Round 17 is on the docket for Oct. 30 at Buffalo.George Halas vs. Curly LambeauNearly 100 years ago, these two titans of American football kicked off the oldest rivalry in NFL history. Lambeau helped found the Green Bay Packers in 1919. The Green Bay native played for the team from 1919-29 and served as both its head coach and general manager from 1919-49. Halas founded the Decatur Staleys in 1920. The Chicago native moved the team to his hometown the following season, and the franchise became known as the Chicago Bears in 1922. He played for the franchise from 1920-28, coached it for 40 seasons, served as its longtime general manager and owned the team until his death in 1982.During the formative years of the Bears-Packers rivalry, Halas and Lambeau became fierce rivals but respected each other greatly. They faced each other 41 times, and Halas held a 28-14-3 advantage. They met four more times after Lambeau moved on from Green Bay, first to the Chicago Cardinals and then to Washington. They went 2-2 in those games. Both men were part of the inaugural Pro Football Hall of Fame class in 1963. Halas served as a pallbearer at Lambeaus funeral in 1965.Pete Carroll vs. Jim HarbaughCarroll and Harbaugh got chippy when they locked horns as Pac-10 foes, and things escalated quickly when they graduated to the NFL.Their first meeting was a classic, with Harbaugh guiding 41-point underdog Stanford to a stunning road win over Carroll and No. 2 Southern California in 2007. Carroll and the Trojans got revenge with a 45-23 win in Palo Alto the next year. The rubber match in 2009 went to Harbaugh, when the Cardinal won 55-21, to hand USC its worst defeat in more than 40 years.Carroll moved on to the Seattle Seahawks in 2011, and Harbaugh joined him in the NFC West as coach of the San Francisco 49ers the next year. They went 4-4 head to head during the regular season over the next four years, but Carroll captured the ultimate tiebreaker by winning the 2013 NFC Championship Game -- a result that left Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who played under Harbaugh at Stanford, famously chirping into television cameras. This rivalry went on hiatus when Harbaugh returned to coach his alma mater, Michigan, in 2015. But it wouldnt surprise us to one day see Harbaugh return to the NFL -- or for Carroll to become head coach at Ohio State. Stay tuned.Phil Jackson vs. Pat RileyThe most bruising defense in NBA history was on display in the 1990s, and these two legendary coaches and their teams memorably battled five times in the Eastern Conference playoffs.Riley piloted the high-flying Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA championships in the 1980s, but as head coach of the New York Knicks, he used players such as Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley to focus on ferocious defense. Jackson and the Chicago Bulls, meantime, were building a dynasty on the shoulders of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Though the Bulls were known for Jordans aerial heroics, they learned how to absorb punches and give them right back -- having slugged it out in previous playoff series with the ruthless Detroit Pistons.Jacksons Bulls were the irresistible force. Rileys Knicks were the immovable object. They squared off in three consecutive postseasons from 1992-94, and both ranked among the NBAs top three in scoring defense each of those years. The Knicks pushed Chicago to seven games in the 1992 conference semifinals and six games in the 1993 conference finals. The Bulls won the NBA Finals both years. New York finally broke through to beat the Bulls in the 1994 conference semifinals in seven games, while Jordan was on sabbatical playing minor league baseball. The Knicks ultimately lost to the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals. After Riley moved on to coach the Miami Heat, the coaches again butted heads in the 1996 and 1997 postseasons. But even with the stout Alonzo Mourning, the Heat didnt brawl quite like Rileys Knicks. The Bulls earned a three-game sweep in the first round in 96 and beat Miami in five games in the 97 conference finals. Chicago went on to win the NBA Finals both years and again in 1998.Geno Auriemma vs. Pat SummittConnecticut and Tennessee stand head and shoulders atop the history of womens college basketball, so its no wonder that the rivalry between the programs and their coaches was intense over the course of 22 matchups from 1995-2007.Auriemmas Huskies went 13-9 in those games, including 4-0 in national championship games. Summitt and the Lady Vols won the last three meetings before ending the series in 2007. UConn won five national titles during those 13 seasons, and Tennessee captured four.Summitt never publicly discussed why she ended the series with UConn. Auriemma said Summitt accused him of breaking recruiting rules but firmly denied any wrongdoing. The schools havent crossed paths in womens basketball since. So which program has the more storied legacy? You cant go wrong either way.Summitt, who died in July, ranks No. 1 in college basketball history with 1,098 wins as a head coach. Auriemma has 955 and counting. Summitt won eight national championships. Auriemma has 11 and counting. A statistical comparison by our colleagues at FiveThirtyEight.com gives the edge to Summitt and Tennessee. Regardless, the UConn-Tennessee rivalry undoubtedly fueled the emergence of womens basketball.Urban Meyer vs. Nick SabanAmong the many great rivalries in college football, this matchup stands out among active coaches. It carried national championship implications when Sabans Alabama Crimson Tide battled Meyers Florida Gators in the mighty Southeastern Conference -- and the stakes remain just as high after Meyers relocation to Ohio State and the Big Ten.Meyer and Saban are 2-2 in four career matchups:Dec. 6, 2008 -- Florida 31, Alabama 20: Tim Tebow threw three touchdown passes as the No. 2 Gators toppled the No. 1 Tide in the SEC Championship Game. Florida went on to defeat Oklahoma for the national title.Dec. 5, 2009 -- Alabama 32, Florida 13: Mark Ingram rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the SEC Championship Game as the No. 2 Tide upset the No. 1 Gators. Alabama subsequently beat Texas for the national title.Oct. 2, 2010 -- Alabama 31, Florida 6: Ingram ran for two touchdowns, and the No. 1 Tide rolled up 170 rushing yards to dominate the No. 7 Gators in a regular-season game.Jan. 1, 2015 -- Ohio State 42, Alabama 35: Ezekiel Elliott ran for 230 yards and two touchdowns, and Cardale Jones threw for 243 yards in just his second career start as the No. 4 Buckeyes ousted the No. 1 Tide in the semifinals of the inaugural College Football Playoff. Ohio State then defeated Oregon for the national championship. One week into the 2016 season, Alabama is again ranked No. 1 and Ohio State is No. 4. Would anyone be surprised to see Meyer and Saban collide again in the College Football Playoff?Woody Hayes vs. Bo SchembechlerOhio State vs. Michigan is arguably the greatest rivalry in college football. The zenith of its conflict was the Ten Year War, when Hayes and Schembechler prowled the sidelines in opposition from 1969-78.Schembechler was hired by Michigan on a handshake deal on Dec. 27, 1968, replacing Bump Elliott, who resigned after the Buckeyes humbled the Wolverines 50-14 in the regular-season finale. In Schembechlers first season in Ann Arbor, he led the Wolverines to a memorable 24-12 upset of No. 1 Ohio State. The teams split the next two meetings, and the Buckeyes went 3-0-1 under Hayes in the series from 1972-75. Schembechler won the final three head-to-head matchups by a combined score of 50-9, giving him a 5-4-1 final series edge over his mentor.Although the Buckeyes and Wolverines are longtime archrivals, the two fiery coaches were close friends. Schembechler played offensive tackle for Hayes at Miami (Ohio) and was an assistant coach under him at Ohio State. The Hayes-Schembechler rivalry ended abruptly when Hayes was fired on Dec. 30, 1978 -- the fallout of his punching an opposing player in the previous nights loss to Clemson in the Gator Bowl.ESPN UK editor Steven Saunders contributed to this article. MANCHESTER, England -- It has been another fraught, headline-grabbing spell away with Englands national team for Wayne Rooney.Once again, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho must pick up the pieces.Rooney is back under Uniteds control after having been forced to apologize for some late-night revelry while on England duty, when he was pictured -- in his England training gear -- looking bleary-eyed at a wedding reception at the team hotel on Saturday.Rooney was criticized by the English Football Associations chief executive, Martin Glenn, for not setting the right tone as England captain, and the strikers conduct has sparked a fresh wave of negative publicity toward a player who has shown erratic behavior on and off the field earlier in his career.Mourinho said Rooney has been hurt by the negativity toward him.Even if you have or if you build a kind of wall around you to try to feel protected from what people write about you or think about you, the comments people make about you, the wall has always points of fragility, Mourinho said. It has always some little holes. And we are not still, we are flesh and blood. So I think it has an effect.Mourinho must be starting to dread Rooney going away with the national team. Two months ago, the United manager said Rooney came back from England duty a different person than when he left after fierce media criticism that he received after his performance in a World Cup qualifying match against Slovakia.Honestly, I think there was a Wayne before the Slovakia-England and a Wayne after Slovakia-England, Mourinho said at the time. Now, Mourinho faces another fight to get Rooney mentally right,, at a time when the striker had got his place back in both Uniteds and Englands team after a spell of poor form.ddddddddddddSometimes (players) come back stronger than when they left us because something positive happens there -- good performances, good results, Mourinho said. Other times, injuries, sometimes big injuries. Other times frustrations because they didnt play, because the result was bad.In this case we know what didnt go well, but the national team is a different chapter and a chapter that is closed now until March.Mourinho suggested that the England management take better care of Rooney next time he is away with the national team. There were reports in the British media that Mourinho felt let down by the FA for allowing Rooney to stay up late and drink alcohol.I learned since I was a kid, if someone lends me something, I have to take care even better than if it was mine, Mourinho said. You know, your friend lent you a pencil, you have to take care of the pencil better than if it was your pencil. So I think when one day if I become a national-team manager, I will try -- try, I am not saying that I will be successful on that -- ... to build something to protect what is not yours.Mourinho also said he feels Rooney has been unfairly singled out for criticism. If you go one by one to see where these 23 (England) players were, the Portuguese coach added, some of them were in worse places than the hotel bar.Rooneys first game back for United is against Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
